Natalie Eileen (Smith) Wood, 99, went to her eternal resting place on November 6, 2018. Viewing is 11/9: 6-8 PM – Restland Funeral Home, 13003 Greenville Ave, Dallas, TX. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 10 at United Disciples Christian Church, 601 E. Main Street, Richardson at 1 PM. Graveside services at Restland at 2:15.
Natalie was born May 23, 1919 in Centerville, Iowa to George I. and Molly Elizabeth (Kirkpatrick) Smith. At an early age, the family moved to Kremlin, Oklahoma. She graduated from Kremlin High School and later moved with her family to Enid, Oklahoma. She graduated from Phillips University, Enid, Oklahoma.
She married Lester A. Wood on March 27, 1942 in Galveston, Texas. They lived in Oklahoma, Ohio, Georgia, Alabama, and Missouri before settling in Dallas, Texas in 1969. They had 3 daughters.
Natalie was a life-long Christian, Disciple of Christ, serving in various leadership capacities as a Deacon, church youth groups and co-superintendent of Church School. Since 1969 she has been a member of United Disciples Christian Church, Richardson, where she enjoyed participating in many activities, including the Christmas Bazaar, bible teaching and playing the piano in the Friendship Sunday School Class, Christian Women’s Fellowship and in the Mary-Martha Group. She loved being a member of this church and the many life-long friends she made enriched her life. She was an avid reader and faithful in her Bible studies and daily devotions.
Natalie has been described by other teachers as a master teacher and taught for 20 years. She taught elementary school in Union City, Oklahoma, where she met Lester; Altus, Oklahoma, Parkville Missouri; and last at Canyon Creek Elementary, where she taught for 12 years before retiring from the Richardson ISD. She was a lifetime member of Texas PTA, Texas Retired Teachers Association and Richardson Retired Teachers Association.
She is survived by three daughters, Leslie Chesnut of Jenks, Oklahoma; Laura West of Fort Worth, Texas, and Kathy Wood and spouse George of Frisco, Texas; four grandchildren, Jeff Chesnut and spouse Penny, Christy Chesnut Levine and spouse Seth; Mallory and Emily Zenthoefer, great-grandson Jakob Levine, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Lester A. Wood, her brother George Kirk Smith and sister Maralee Smith Lochner.
A special thank you to her caregivers for all the gentle love, devotion and kindness shown Natalie and her family, Tani Taylor and Juanita Hill, the caregivers at Cottonwood Creek Community Healthcare, Richardson and the exceptional nurses at Encompass Hospice Care.
