  1. Shirley’s parents house in Allen held special memories for me. It is here her daughter Rita and her siblings introduced me to the card game Flinch when they all came to visit. It was also here I first learned to ‘be still’ in the quietness of the day. Shirley and her sisters inherited all the special qualities of their mother and were beautiful gracious ladies inside and out. Shirley treasured her family and the unique abilities of each of you, and delighted in each of you completely. In her later years we connected while I was doing research on our shared family and she was always interested in newfound discoveries, sometimes I called her and other time she called me. She enjoyed receiving the clippings from the local paper and magazine on stories of interest about our family I passed along to her. My only regret is that the book I am writing on our family was not published before the death of my own mother and Shirley. Please know that others are thinking of you and sending prayers, and may He hold you close in the days ahead.

  2. Susan and David,
We are sorry to learn of your family’s loss. Shirley was helpful in sharing with our group photos and remembrance stories of early Allen. She was supportive and attended the historical marker dedications of the Christian Church at Allen and the John Liter Brown homestead on Rowlett Creek. We were so pleased to have her with us at the Iris Ladies of Allen display here at the train depot museum in which we honored her mother, Ocie Bland Angel among several others. Your mother’s interest and contributions are a lasting legacy to your family and one for which we are eternally grateful as we strive to preserve and share Allen’s history with our community. We regret we will not be able to attend her memorial service tomorrow as our group is hosting a large group of elementary students from Preston Elementary in Allen who will be touring the Allen Historic Village houses and churches as a part of our outreach mission. As we gather at the old Christian Church to begin our tour we will take a moment to remember Shirley and say a prayer for your family.
    Our deepest sympathy,
Bonnie Borrello on behalf of the Allen Heritage Guild
