October 15, 1937 - March 18, 2022
John Wayne Barfoot was born to Royce E. and Faye Odell Tartt Barfoot on October 15, 1937, in Abilene, Texas, and died peacefully on March 18, 2022, at his home in Dallas, Texas, after a relatively brief yet courageous battle with cancer. He was a loving husband, caring father, unashamedly proud grandfather, and genuine and trusted friend to so many who were blessed to have known him. John was a man of remarkable character, who very naturally yet humbly exhibited honesty, integrity, and selflessness. During his childhood in Abilene and into his college years at The University of Texas, he developed deep and enduring friendships which lasted throughout his adulthood and in many cases for entire lifetimes. Beyond his devotion to his family and friends, John enjoyed a long and successful career as an independent insurance agent and partner at Peavy Insurance Agency in Garland, Texas. He worked tirelessly and with a quiet tenacity and reliability, resulting in a successful and enduring career that was marked by his earning the trust of and continued business with countless clients, receiving admiration and respect from his colleagues, and exhibiting integrity and a work ethic that were unparalleled. In addition to his successful career, John enjoyed spending his leisure time traveling with his wife, family, and friends; enjoying nature and the outdoors through hunting, fishing, and hiking; developing his skill and talent in photography; and remaining active and fit as a lifelong and accomplished runner. And as much as he enjoyed his long career and the satisfaction and rewards of hard work, he happily transitioned into his retirement years, spending more time traveling with his wife, getting together with longtime friends, engaging in all-things outdoors, and experiencing great joy and pride as a grandfather to two loving granddaughters. John was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Sidney Seale Barfoot. He is survived by a daughter, Ann Barfoot, and her fiancé, Matt Wolfgang; a son, Bill Barfoot, and his wife, Renée; and two granddaughters, Caroline and Ella Kate Barfoot. A memorial service will be held at Lake Highlands United Methodist Church on Thursday, March 24, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that remembrances be made in the form of contributions to the National Parks Conservation Association, the Dementia Society of America, or the charity of your choice.
