Johnie Marie Smith's Obituary
Johnie Marie (Whittington) Smith (June 8, 1934 - October 25, 2022)
Today we celebrate the life of Johnie Marie Smith. Just before sunrise, on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, our mother, Johnie Marie Smith transitioned from earth and spent her first sunrise from her heavenly home with Jesus. She was 88 years old when she passed away.
She was a Christian who loved the Lord dearly, a beloved mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother.
Johnie was born in 1934 to Lawrence & Ruby Whittington in Palestine, Texas. Sharing a loving home with 5 sisters and 2 brothers she was taught the Word of God and the importance of living a life of integrity, strong character with an emphasis on kindness and love for others.
At the age of 15 while working as a carhop with her sisters, Johnie met the love of her life. She married her soul mate, Carl William Smith on November 18, 1950. They established deep roots in Texas with a life filled with love, laughter, and a strong faith. After 8 years of marriage, Johnie and Carl were blessed with the birth of a son they named Johnny Matia. Within 3 days, after his birth Johnny went to heaven suffering from a respiratory illness. They became a Momma and Daddy again with the birth of their daughters, Carla D'wan in 1961 and Cindy Leah in 1963.
Johnie's kindness, unselfish, humble personality and character were recognized by everyone she met. She never met a stranger and always took the time to listen to the needs of family, friends and even strangers. Mom had a servant's heart and was continually helping those less fortunate. Johnie loved her church and was very involved and an active member at Sunset Church of Christ in Lubbock, TX.
Everyone that knew her was in awe of her Strength, Courage and Dedication to our Lord. The warmth and happiness she brought to us cannot be overstated. She was loved more than words can possibly say and she will live on forever through her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Johnie is survived by her 2 daughters, 2 son-in-laws, 5 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, her younger brother as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and other loved ones.
We are inviting all friends and family to join us as we praise God and thank Him for our mom, Johnie Marie Smith. During life and in her illness, she was always a kind and gentle person who never lost sight of her focus while living for God. A celebration of her life will be held in the chapel at the Faith Presbyterian Hospice, T Boone Pickens Center, 12477 Merritt Drive, Dallas, Texas 75251 on Saturday, November 12, 2022 from 10AM to 1PM. This service will include a time for sharing your stories of our sweet mom followed by a balloon launch with letters to heaven, and a light brunch including fudgesicles for dessert (her favorite dessert which she expected everyone to eat with her when visiting).
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at MD Anderson Cancer Center and the amazing nurses at Faith Presbyterian Hospice for their kindness and compassionate care during our mom's stay. Thank you to our family and friends for their support and prayers.
A special thank you to mom's caregivers and best friends, Jo Wood and Mary Alas. Thank you for the love, kindness and fun you brought into her life. You are truly angels and a blessing to our family!
Most of all we thank God, our Creator for the compassion and mercy He showed to our mom. He NEVER left her side - we could feel His presence and almost see the Angels as they carried her to heaven! We will miss our mom so much but celebrate her new home in Heaven!
