Vera Louise Merrill's Obituary
MERRILL, VERA LOUISE Age 95, passed away Monday, March 12, 2012, at Life Care Center of Plano, Texas. Vera was born March 26, 1916, in Chanute, Kansas, to Chester A. Irwin and Elizabeth Heitmann Irwin. Raised in Kansas City, Missouri, she was the oldest of 4 children. After attending business college, Vera married her high school sweetheart, Robert Dillon Merrill, Jr., and they shared 67 happy years together before his death in 2006. Vera was a long-time member of Lovers Lane United Methodist Church, originally joining in 1947. She worked as music secretary for 14 years. A dedicated member, Vera served her church in many ways including teaching Sunday School, singing in the Sanctuary Choir, serving as Administrative Board Secretary and on the Nominating Committee, being past president and active in the United Methodist Women, and working diligently on UMW Bazaars, Sew ‘n Sew Group, Pandora’s Room and the Archives and History Committee. In 1994, Vera was honored to receive the Heritage Award for her dedicated service to the church. Vera is survived by her two sons: Kent Irwin Merrill and wife, Diana, of Plano and Robert Scott Merrill and wife, Frances, of Valley View; a sister, Martha Price and husband, Jim, of Kansas City, MO; five grandchildren: Laura Von Loh and husband, Donn, Dr. Allison Merrill and husband, John Baker, Kent G. Merrill and wife, Nicole, Dena Dunn and husband, Tom Broyles, and Pat Dunn and wife, Joni. She was blessed with eleven great grandchildren and one great -great grandson, as well as, loving nieces and nephews. Visitation is Friday, March 16, 2012, from 1:30 – 2:45 p.m. at Restland Funeral Home followed by a graveside service for family and friends at 3:00 p.m. at Restland Memorial Park. Rev. Donna Whitehead of Lovers Lane United Methodist Church will officiate. Memorial donations may be made to the United Methodist Women at Lovers Lane United Methodist Church, 9200 Inwood Road, Dallas, TX 75220.
