Albert N. Tyler III's Obituary
Albert N. Tyler III, age 100, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2025. Al was born September 11, 1924, in Emporia, Kansas, to Albert N. Tyler II and Beulah Ely Tyler. Serving in the South Pacific Theater of World Word II, Al received an Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters and a Purple Heart, for injuries he received when his B-25 was shot down and forced to ditch. After the war he returned to Emporia where he met Bobbie Jean Ross and they married on December 21, 1947.
Al received a degree in geology from the University of Kansas — Rock Chalk Jayhawk! — Al spent most of his career as a petroleum geologist with Sun Oil Company retiring after 37 years. After retiring from Sun Oil, Al teamed up with petroleum engineers and did consulting work for 10 more years.
During his time with Sun Oil, Al and his family moved several times before moving to Lake Highlands in 1958, where he and Bobbie raised their three children, Jonnie, Kathy and Rod. A devoted member of Lake Highlands United Methodist Church and the Elks Club, Al did everything from serving on boards, ushering, gathering food for the needy, and mentored youth through Indian Guides, Boy Scouts and coaching little league. Just about every Sunday for many years, you could find Al, often wearing a red tie, ushering during the church service, where Bobbie would often have to remind him not to sing so loud.
Al and Bobbie moved into the Overlook at CC Young, when it opened and enjoyed being a part of many of the social activities provided. They were married for 70 years until her death on March 1, 2018. Al continued living at the Overlook until his death.
