Bette J. Mathers' Obituary
MATHERS, BETTE Jean Barnes Met her Lord on April 1, 2011. She was the daughter of Gertrude and Arthur Barnes of Dallas, Texas. Growing up in Dallas, she graduated from Highland Park High School in 1944. Upon graduation, she entered Stephens College in Columbia, MO , and came back to Dallas to finish at Southern Methodist University, graduating in 1947. At SMU she was an active member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. It was at this time she met and married the love of her life, Dudley Buckner Mathers, who has preceded her in death. Bette was a faithful member of the Highland Park Presbyterian Church. She loved reading, and her book club. She also loved her garden, her sewing club, and enjoyed the Dallas Museum of Art. She was devoted to her husband, Dudley and to her two children. Bette is survived by daughter, Anna Catherine (Cay) Mathers Thorn and husband John of Fayetteville, AR, son, William Ryder Mathers and his partner Terry Nelson, both of Dallas; her brother, Arthur Barnes of Dallas; grandchildren, Katherine Michelle Thorn Myers, and Jonathan Edward Buckner Thorn; great granddaughter, Alexandra Myers, all of Fayetteville, AR; and numerous cousins. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 PM, Sunday, April 3, 2011 at Restland Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, April 4, 2011 at Restland Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Juvenile Diabetes Assoc. or the charity of your choice.
