Betty Hill's Obituary
Betty Eskrigge Hill departed this life on August 13, 2020, four days past her 96th birthday. She was born in Wallasey, Cheshire, England on August 9, 1924 to Eric T. Eskrigge and Constance Edith Johnson Eskrigge. The family moved to the United States in 1927 where her father worked as a cotton broker. They settled in Clarksdale Mississippi, where Betty graduated from high school in 1942. She earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1946 from Mississippi State College for Women. After working in various places; Portsmouth, VA, St Mary's Junior College in Maryland, Brenau College in Gainesville Georgia, she finished her Master's at Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee in 1953. Betty was hired to teach P. E. in Dallas, Texas in 1953 at South Oak Cliff High School. In 1962, she became a counselor at S.O.C. where she met her future husband, Col. Joe McFarland Hill, the R.O.T.C. commandant at the high school. In 1968, she began counseling at Richardson Jr. High, where she remained until her retirement in 1984.
Betty was predeceased by her husband in 1999, and her step-grandson Brian Meredith Hill in 2000. She led an active retirement while living at Meadowstone Place, travelling and playing bridge with friends, until 2016 when she moved to Appletree Court assisted living in Richardson. The family thanks the staff at both communities for their excellent care.
Betty is survived by her four step-children and their spouses: Mary Helen Haines and husband Michael Haines, Joe Meredith Hill and wife Karen Farabee Hill, Betsi Anne Hill, and Cynthia Jane Kreider and husband David Lee Kreider, as well as two grandchildren: Dottie Haines and Julie Hill McCure with husband Scott McCure, and two great-grandchildren, Parker Scott McCure and Lucas Joe McCure.
Betty will be buried with her husband Joe M. Hill at Restland Cemetery in Dallas.
