Carmen Chears' Obituary
CHEARS, CARMEN JOHNSON passed away Friday, November 9, 2012 in Dallas at the age of 81 with her daughter and son-in- law at her side. Born April 4, 1931 in Gastonia, NC, she attended Gastonia schools and graduated from Salem College in Winston Salem, NC. After marrying, she moved to Dallas in 1958 to begin her life as a wife and mother. Carmen’s giving spirit found expression in many ways. She was a loving and beloved friend; a caring neighbor; and a guide of impeccable taste, counseling hundreds of clients who sought her advice for the important events in their lives through the selection of social and business stationeries, a talent and pleasure she found later in her life. With a passion for color and style, she loved decorating and gardening, and her garden drew her neighbors into a community that kept her flowers beautiful in anticipation of her return home. Carmen was a vibrant member of Highland Park Presbyterian Church, active in the Westminster Class, Precepts Bible Study, and the church’s sewing club. She was also a long time member of the Preston Hills book club. Carmen faced life’s challenges with perseverance and grace. Whether it was living with diabetes for 70 years or the untimely death of her son, she always understood they were part of God’s plan for her life. She was gracious and kind and circled herself with a beautiful group of friends from many backgrounds who cared deeply for her. Carmen was preceded in death by her parents; by Dr. William Crockett Chears, Jr.; and her only son William Crockett (Bill) Chears, III. She is survived by her daughter Catherine Chears Sonnier and husband Rick; and adored granddaughters Emily and Grace. She is also survived by her dear brother Rufus Manfred Johnston and wife Geraldine; a niece and nephew. A memorial service will be held on Saturday November 17 at 10:00am at Highland Park Presbyterian Church, Wynne Chapel with the Rev. Dr. L. Nelson Bell, II officiating. A reception will follow in the church parlor. In lieu of flowers, Carmen requested that memorial gifts be sent to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation: by mail to JDRF, 26 Broadway, 14th Floor, New York, NY 10004; or call 800-533-2873; or online at JDRF.org
