Carolyn Ann Howard Rhodes' Obituary
A Life Authored By God
Life is often like a book with many chapters—some short, some long, some quiet, and some that shake the earth with their arrival. And on April 22, 1952, while the world watched the first live broadcast of the U.S. testing an atomic bomb, another explosive force entered this world—one whose impact would be felt not in destruction but in love, wisdom, laughter, and spirit.
Lee Edgar Howard and Edwine Larcine Isom Howard welcomed their fourth child—the true middle child of seven—into the world with joy. Carolyn Ann Howard arrived with purpose stitched into her being, destined to brighten every room and every life she touched.
Chapter 1: She’s Here!
From the beginning, Carolyn stood out—with an inquisitive mind and a beautifully creative spirit. She loved writing, music, problem-solving, and puzzles-she was a strategic thinker.
Her talents led her into the marching band where she proudly played the baritone, and her strong academic drive carried her through Booker T. Washington High School before graduating from North Dallas High School in 1970.
Her scholastic excellence earned her acceptance into prestigious programs at Southern Methodist University. Though she later declined the opportunity, God brought the blessing full circle when her grandson, Christian, was accepted into SMU on a full scholarship. God truly works through generations.
Chapter 2: I Now Pronounce You Carolyn Rhodes
As Carolyn stepped into adulthood and began shaping the life ahead of her, new chapters of love, purpose, and service unfolded.
In 1972, a charming and determined young man named Lester Rhodes caught Carolyn’s eye. Winning her heart took time—she was discerning and not easily swayed—but love found its way. In 1974, they married, beginning a lifelong partnership grounded in faith, commitment, and raising their four children.
Carolyn continued to pour her gifts into children and families through her work at Charles Rice Learning Center and later at Dallas Scottish Rite, where she supported young learners with compassion and creativity.
She went on to build a remarkable 25-year career with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, retiring in 2005. Everywhere she worked, she uplifted, encouraged, and left a lasting imprint.
A lifelong member and servant of Ledbetter Baptist Church, Carolyn and Lester reared their family there. Together, they remained steadfast in their service and commitment to Ledbetter until her passing.
She embodied the heart of a Proverbs 31 woman, serving on the Usher Board, contributing to the Mission Board, singing in the choir (and pews) and faithfully teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She especially treasured the summers she taught VBS, including the honor of teaching her own grandchildren.
Carolyn also co-founded G.W.I.M.-God’s Word in Motion with her husband, Lester, A Family Bible Study ministry that has equipped believers for more than 25 years and continues to thrive.
Chapter 3: Oh, What a Legacy!
A servant’s heart.
A healing touch.
A blessing to others.
A direct and honest voice of wisdom.
A safe place in a noisy world.
A mentor to men and women of all ages.
A friend to the hurting.
A phenomenal woman in every sense of the word.
Carolyn’s gift for teaching extended far beyond the classroom. She guided, encouraged, uplifted, and loved without judgment. Many came to her not only for counsel but for her famous therapeutic massages—those fingers were like magic!
Though only 5'2", Carolyn carried the fire of a giant. She meant what she said, she said what she meant, and no one ever had to wonder what was on her mind. Her boldness, paired with deep compassion, defined her.
Being a grandmother was one of the greatest joys of her life. She cherished every one of her grandchildren, praying earnestly that they would know who they are in Christ and walk boldly in their salvation. The arrival of her great grandchild magnified that joy even more, reminding her of God’s faithfulness across generations.
This is the woman we celebrate today.
This is the love we carry forward.
This is the legacy that will never fade.
