Dennis Anthony Sweeney's Obituary
Dennis A. Sweeney
September 13, 1940 - March 8, 2025
After a life well lived and joyful memories, we announce the passing of Dennis Sweeney, a beloved husband, uncle, godfather and friend, who left this world on March 8, 2025, at the age of 84. Dennis was the last to check into the ultimate family reunion with his parents, Francis and Clara, and his lively brothers: Michael, Bernie, Jonathan, and his beloved sister, Liz. Let the laughter and love continue in the great beyond!
Born, educated, lived in, employed by and retired from the City and County of San Francisco…a true City boy. Dennis embraced life with open arms, a mischievous grin and boisterous laugh, reminiscent of his namesake, Dennis the Menace. Golden Gate Park was not just a backdrop but his childhood playground, shaping his lifelong love for the great outdoors. His faith provided wisdom and comfort throughout his life, guiding him in all his endeavors.
Dennis was a proud alum of San Francisco City College, where he served as student body president, and his interest in politics was evident in his commitment to community service. His journey from a youthful delinquent to Chief of the San Francisco Probation Department is a testament to his perseverance, dedication, and desire to uplift others, particularly those who needed a helping hand. He served the City of San Francisco for 34 years.
For 47 wonderful years, Dennis was married to his beloved Zephyr, whom he wed on Valentine's Day. Together, they created a joyful life filled with laughter and love. Every gathering sparkled with their presence, and they brought a unique warmth wherever they went. Their shared love for travel allowed them to experience the beauty of the world together beyond the city they adored.
At 6'5", Dennis had a presence that filled any room, commanding attention not just with his stature but with his vibrant personality and indomitable spirit. He took immense pride in his service in the U.S. Marine Corps from January 1959 to August 1963, embracing core values that shaped the man he became.
Dennis’s academic journey reflected his commitment to service and excellence, earning multiple degrees, including a Master of Public Administration from the University of Southern California and a Master of Social Work from San Francisco State University. His relentless pursuit of knowledge laid the foundation for a life dedicated to making a difference.
His motto, “Let sleeping dogs lie,” and his heartfelt belief in the words of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., exemplified his outlook on life—encouraging others to be active contributors to society and fostering a world where character mattered above all else.
In addition to his remarkable career and passionate advocacy for the underprivileged, Dennis held a deep love for fishing, often finding peace and solace by the water. His sharp sense of humor brought joy and laughter to the lives he touched, and his compassion for those with less was an inspiration to all who knew him.
As we reflect on Dennis's incredible life, we celebrate a man who truly embodied love, strength, and laughter. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of his family and friends, who strive to carry forward his legacy of kindness and service.
Rest peacefully, Dennis. Your spirit lives on in the laughter, warmth, and love you gave to the world.
