My heart is sadden to hear this news. General Payne and Mrs. Elsie will always hold a special place in my heart. General Payne gave my dad an opportunity not only while at Keesler for him, but for our entire family. It was some of the best times of my childhood and I will never forget. Elsie and family, Tom and I were so sorry to hear of Don's passing. What a wonderful person. He was very instrumental in keeping Eastern Hills a float during our very trying times. His devotion was endless and it's closure was very devastating to us all. He was a very gentle man and was credited with keeping our country safe. I know you all will miss him. May he Rest in Peace. My first flying lesson was with Dad. We took off from Addison Airport in a little Cessna heading for Texarkana. Right after takeoff he tells me to take the controls because he needs to look at something on a chart. So I take the controls for my first time and he stretches the chart all the way across the windscreen to find the information he wanted. I could not see a thing out the front of the aircraft. He told me to just use the instruments! So my first flying lesson was on instruments. I have many good memories of flying in fighter aircraft, but my favorite is my memory of flying with Dad.
Just remember the countless hours Don gave to making Eastern Hills a wonderful place for us all to take our families. The Paynes are probably some of the most gracious & kind neighbors ever. Lots of love to the family. Pat & Anne Martinkus
