Doris F. Witmer's Obituary
WITMER, DORIS MAY FERRY Went to be with her Lord on July 31, 2010. Born in Wheaton, IL on October 29, 1920, Doris was a “Texan by choice” and has lived in Dallas since 1943. She is survived by her three children, Marilyn Witmer Custis, John Richard Witmer, Deborah Witmer Jones; 8 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren. In 1942, Doris earned her B.A. degree at Wheaton College in Speech and English. She married John Albert Witmer in 1943 and they moved to Dallas where she taught speech, was active in church groups, child evangelism, book clubs, polictics, PTA and service clubs. In the late 40’s she was “Cousin Doris” on KRLD radio telling Bible Stories. In 1966 she received a “Hats Off” award for community service. In 1971 she launched Witmer Enterprises designing, producing and marketing Scripture gift-wrap paper. She had a hobby of entering contests and over the years won many nice prizes and trips. Besides being a professional book reviewer, she spoke at churches, conventions and retreats and was in several metroplex commercials. She played the part of “the grandmother” in the film, “The Passover” and was interviewed many times on local radio stations. Doris was a gracious hostess to any group that wanted to have a luncheon or a party at her large Swiss Avenue home. In later years, she started and helped with Sunday Evening Services at her retirement apartment at Three Fountains for over ten years. The Witmers traveled extensively throughout the United States, North America and abroad. In past years, much of her time and devotion was spent helping at Scofield Memorial Church, where John taught a Sunday School Class for over 45 years, and at Dallas Theological Seminary, where her husband was a professor. As a couple, they spread the love of the Lord through selfless service to others in hundreds of ways. She was the ultimate example of a strong, hard working, vivacious and fun committed Christian who loved her Lord. Memorials may be made to Dallas Theological Seminary. Services will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, August 7, 2010 at Restland Wildwood Chapel. Visitation will be from 6:00PM – 8:00PM, Friday at Restland Funeral Home.
