Dorothy Lou Fox Mason and I met in 1976 not long after I moved to Dallas. We were in the same ballroom dance class, taught by a couple named Polly and Charles, whose last name I cannot recall at the moment. She was the one who introduced me to all her friends (she had many) and helped me feel welcome. We often went to ballroom dances in a group and sat together, further enhancing the sheer pleasure of doing what we loved. In 1985, Dorothy let me move in with her prior to my wedding to save on my apartment rent. In her typical hospitality, she invited my parents to stay in her house as well, in the few days prior to the occasion. She was my wardrobe and makeup consultant, and she served punch and cake at my reception. I have many more precious memories of Dorothy, her lively sense of humor, her way of making everyone feel special. Her five children, David, Danny, Ross, Linda, and Anna, are living testament to the example she set of how to live a full and vibrant life. She often spoke of her extended family, her pride in each of them, and the joy they brought her. Their dedication to assisting her to live independently as long as possible greatly impresses me. I thank God for our friendship of 45 years..
