Evelyn Steffen's Obituary
Evelyn Steffen was born in West Allis, WI on March 14, 1925 to Raymond and Fay Manegold. She had an older brother, Milton. Just before high school, her family moved to Milwaukee where her family owned and ran a grocery store. It was the Great Depression and her family made ends meet by taking in boarders while her father worked various jobs. Evelyn met her future husband, Harold Steffen, in the mid-1940’s and they were married on September 2, 1947. The couple initially lived with Evelyn’s parents until they were able to afford a house on the south side of Milwaukee. The couple had their first and only child, Scott, in 1962. Evelyn became a stay-at-home mother. She stayed involved in Scott’s activities, including cub scouts and PTA.In 1974, Harold’s company transferred him to the Dallas, TX area and the family settled in Richardson. Evelyn promptly joined Newcomers and the family made strong bonds with the other Mobil Oil people who had also been transferred.Evelyn was a prolific letter writer and she would often write multiple letters a day. She stayed in touch with family and friends up north through handwritten letters. When her son went to college, she would write to him, sometimes multiple letters a day. She was a great reader too, blowing through a book or two in a day and speedreading through the Sunday paper, much to the chagrin of her husband.Scott was married in the late 80’s and Evelyn was immediately blessed with grandchildren. For someone who loved children the way she did, that was a true blessing. She and Harold loved having grandchildren and when they weren’t traveling, they were spending time with family or friends.Evelyn’s loving husband Harold passed away in 1993 and Evelyn began another chapter in her life. She was a single grandparent and she showed her love for her grandchildren by spoiling them. She would pick them up to get donuts or bring them candy. She had an incurable sweet tooth. She took them on vacations to New York, Montreal, and even the Mall of America in MN.As Evelyn got older in 2000’s, she moved to first an independent living apartment and then transferred to the assisted living side of the complex. By this time, she had great grandkids to dote on but her ability to do so was limited. She would call her son and ask him to come get a couple of bags of candy to give to the kids so she wouldn’t eat them. She would give him money to give them. She was always an easy touch for money. She and Harold had worked hard to earn and save money but she never hesitated giving it to family or various charities.Evelyn passed from her life on earth on June 23, 2019. Much of her family had been with her the day before and several were there the day of her passing. We grieve our loss but we celebrate her liberation from her old weakened body and her ascension to Heaven to be with those who have passed before her. She will live on here on earth in our hearts and memories. Amen.
