Mr. George Joseph Babin's Obituary
George Joseph Babin, born in Thibodaux, LA, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2024. He was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Diane (Brand) Babin; his father, Edward S. Babin; his mother, Edna M. (Andras) Babin; and his nephew, Jimmy Holloway.
George will be remembered for his sense of humor, passion for dancing, and love of cooking. His sister recalls how he loved dancing well into his later years, laughing that he’d finally reached a point where he could only enjoy dancing on television. Watching Dancing with the Stars alongside Diane became a favorite pastime, often with the humor-filled refrain, “We’re watching dancing on TV—guess we’re getting old!” In his younger days, George danced with his grandchildren, creating treasured memories. His family gatherings, especially at his brother-in-law’s family home in Louisiana, were marked by his unforgettable Cajun cooking, with crawfish boils and holiday feasts that everyone eagerly anticipated.
In a moment of school day affection, George’s sister Brenda Holloway called out to him with a loud, “Hey, Pookie!” From then on, friends and family lovingly referred to him by the nickname “Pookie.” His grandchildren knew him affectionately as “Popo.”
George graduated from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1966. During his high school and college years, he spent his spare time working at the sugar mill in Meeker, LA. After college, George joined the Air Force and served at the Los Angeles Air Force Station in California. With his degree in Mechanical Engineering, he returned to Louisiana and resumed his work as an engineer at the sugar mill.
In 1982, George relocated to Dallas, where he worked as an engineer for Fluor Daniel. After marrying Diane, they lived in South Carolina until his retirement, at which point they moved back to Texas.
George is survived by his sister, Brenda Holloway (spouse, Charlie Holloway) of Forest Hill, LA; his son, Greg Babin of Lecompte, LA; his stepdaughter Rogane Christal (spouse, Joel Christal) of Katy, TX; his stepdaughter Angela Stilson (spouse, Brian Stilson) of Colleyville, TX; his eight grandchildren, Hailee Davis (spouse, Joel Davis), Matthew Stilson (spouse, Savannah Finch), Chase Christal (spouse, Raquel Christal), Andrew Stilson (spouse, Katherine Agnew), Brieanna Stilson, Katherine (Katie) Babin, Brooke Babin, and Hannah Babin; and three great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his niece Cherilyn Melder (spouse, Ronnie Melder) and great-niece Brittany Melder.
George's warmth, wit, and love will be missed dearly by his family and friends, whose lives he touched in countless ways.
A graveside ceremony will be held at Restland Cemetery on November 15th at 1:00 PM, with visitation from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM, also at Restland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in honor of George Babin may be sent to the American Heart Association (https://www.heart.org/?form=FUNQCSERKQD) or Christian Homes and Family Services (https://christianhomes.com/give-today/).
