Mr. George Bishop Owen's Obituary
George Bishop”Jerry” Owen, a beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather, & friend, passed
away January 12, 2023, at 92 years young.
He was born August 21, 1930 in Athens, TX. Moved to Dallas in 1940, and joined Park Cities
Baptist Church, when the attendance was around 200. He became a Believer there, and
returned to the church he loved in later years. Jerry graduated from Highland Park High School
in Dallas, and attended Baylor University, then graduated from SMU in Dallas in 1951, with a
B.S. in Journalism.
He met the love of his life, his strawberry-blonde, Joan Rogers in 1951 at Park Cities, and
married her in 1955. She waited for him while he served in the Navy in Korea from 1952-1954.
He was always very proud of his Veteran service, and created a Veteran Wall to honor all the
Veterans at his apartment community.
Following in his father’s footsteps, he was a traveling salesman with Daniel Green Co. He was a
top salesman for 40 years with them, and retired at the end of 1992.
Jerry & Joan started out in Richardson, Shreveport, LA, then settled in the North Dallas area.
He lived there until moving to Fort Worth to be near his daughter.
He will always be remembered for his sense of humor, quick wit, and never-met-a-stranger
mentality. He was patient, selfless, loving and always thoughtful. A brilliant man, with a brain for
order and finance. He loved the Navy, Baylor Bears, and being “Gramps”. He left his mark on
everyone who knew him.
Predeceased by beloved wife of nearly 58 years, Joan Owen, daughter Janis, parents Reagan
& Gladys Owen, brothers, Dr. William R. Owen of Houston, and Robert J. (Bob) Owen of Dallas.
