Gladys Housewright's Obituary
HOUSEWRIGHT, Gladys Ross Passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on October 5, 2016 in Dallas Texas where she lived her entire adult life. She was born in Allen, Texas on April 30, 1927, the eighth and youngest child of D.C. “Pike” Ross and Viola McVey Ross. She spent most of her youth on the family farm near Wylie, Texas. While attending Wylie H. S. she was an outstanding scholar and athlete. She lettered four years in basketball and also starred on the softball and volleyball teams. Upon graduation from high school, she rode the bus to Dallas and began her career as an assistant bookkeeper for Mercantile Bank in Dallas, applying her excellent math skills. She also played on the bank’s softball team and was a windmill-style fast pitcher. One of her proudest moments came when R.L. Thornton, the bank president, came down to thank her for pitching a no-hitter against the bank’s biggest rival. During the same time period playing for a soda bottling company team, she placed third in a free throw shooting contest at a national basketball tournament. She made 96 of 100 attempts. In 1946, she married her high school sweetheart, Don A. House-wright after he returned from World War II. They were married for 63 years until his death. They had two children, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. After her team-playing days were over, she became one of the top women bowlers in the Metroplex, placing fourth in The Dallas Morning News annual tournament one year. She carried a 212 average. She also coached a girls’ softball team for Wesley Methodist Church and was named to All-State Tournament teams in basketball and volleyball while playing for the church. Later, she became an expert bridge player and won Duplicate tournaments in the area with her best friend Kathy Bradshaw. Professionally she became a full-charge bookkeeper and over the years helped several entrepreneurs establish successful businesses. She is survived by her children, Mark Housewright and Marsha Housewright Carr, her grandchildren Gary Summers, Kelly Housewright Grisham, Nicki Carr Schmid, and Jill Housewright Bailey, and great-grandchildren Adam and Kyle Schmid, Haley Housewright and Riley Grisham. Services will be held on Monday, Oct. 10 at Restland Cemetery in the Wildwood Chapel beginning at 12:30pm with visitation at 11am. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, at Restland Road, Dallas, TX 75243.
