Harry Jules Martin's Obituary
In Loving Memory of Harry Jules Martin Harry Jules Martin was born September 9, 1924 in St. Louis, Missouri. He passed away on January 12, 2015 in Highland Village, Texas at the age of 90 with his wife of 64 years, Olive Martin, by his side. He is survived by his daughter, Sandy Roberts and her husband Leif Roberts; his son, Harry Martin, Jr.; his grandson, Allen Roberts and his wife, Jennifer and their daughter Betty; his granddaughter, Jenny Harry and her husband Sam and their children Brenham, Mason and Allie. His great-grandchildren affectionately called him GGPa. Harry attended Harris College taking pre-engineering classes until he entered the armed forces on July 23, 1943 by reporting to the Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis, Missouri. He was assigned to the 274th Infantry Regiment, Company A at Camp Adair, Oregon. His Company A departed on December 1, 1944 to Marseille, France to engage in World War II. He was wounded on January 6, 1945 when fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. He received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for his service. He was discharged on April 21, 1946 as a Master Sergeant. He entered the Army Reserves until January, 1956 when he resigned as 1st Lieutenant. In the fall of 1946, Harry he attended Washington University in St. Louis where he continued his electrical engineering studies until graduation. During college he played baseball and was a boxer. His best friend, Don Gemming and the woman Don was dating, Mary, introduced Harry to Mary’s sister, Olive for a “blind date” golfing. Harry and Olive later married on April 15, 1950. His business career involved him in the electrical construction industry where he advanced from General Manger to Chief Estimator, Chief Engineer and Vice-President of several electrical contracting companies. He oversaw numerous hotel and apartment complex projects including the Chase Hotel Convention Center, Addison State Bank Building, the historic Mercantile Commerce Tower Building in downtown Dallas, the Griffin Square Office Building, Dallas City Hall, 2001 Bryan Tower, Carpenter Brothers Office Building, Republic National Bank Tower Building, Redbird Mall Shopping Center, Valley View Mall Shopping Center, the Apparel Mart, and various department store buildings for Sears, Sanger-Harris, Montgomery Ward, J.C. Penny. He also worked on various industrial facilities, power plants, hospitals including the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Crippled Children and the Veterans Administration Hospital, along with military and governmental agency facilities for NASA and in Saudi Arabia. Harry had his Electrical Masters License, Electrical Contractors License, a Texas Board of Private Investigators and Private Security Agencies Security System Installation Managers License. He was President of the Greater Dallas Electrical League and President of his neighborhood Sparkman Club Estates. He was a member of the Love Field Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Texas, the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry and the Hella Temple Shriners. He was a 33rd degree Mason. Harry was an avid golfer, hunter, fisherman, amateur ham radio operator and square dancer. He enjoyed grilling for his family and friends with his barbequed ribs being a favorite. As a husband and father, his work ethic allowed him to provide for his family whom he loved very much. He was a gentlemen, role model and friend to all with a great smile. In lieu of flowers, his family requests a donation to the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital, 222 Welborn Street, Dallas, Texas 75219. Attention: Development Department. A graveside service will be at 1:15 PM on January 20, 2015 at DFW National Cemetery.
