Helen C. Whitaker's Obituary
WHITAKER, HELEN ANTONETTE CHERRY was born October 10, 1915 in Duluth, Minnesota to Joseph and Josephine Cherry. She left this life March 13, 2014, at the age of 98 after a brief illness. Cherry grew up in Minnesota with her older sister, Rose and her younger brother, Art. She was working as a sales clerk in New York when she met her future husband, Clyde Whitaker. They were married in Columbus, Ohio on October 2, 1943, during World War II. Clyde was a Captain in the Army Air Corps and flew B-17 bombers. He and Cherry lived in Germany briefly after the war, eventually settling in Dallas. After a miscarriage and a heartbreaking still birth they were blessed with their only child, Carl, in 1956. In April of 1965, Clyde died of a heart attack leaving Cherry to raise Carl alone. Cherry was a devoted mother. She was also a devoted friend, faithfully visiting and caring for friends in need. She is preceded in death by her parents, both siblings, her husband and many dear friends. Cherry is survived by her son, Carl and wife, Robin Whitaker of Richardson; her only grandchild, Sean Whitaker of Garland; two nephews, Art, Jr.and wife, Trudy Cherry of Oregon, Roger and wife, Ilona Cherry, also of Oregon; one niece, Rosemarie and husband, Robert Bazin of New Jersey, and a very dear friend, Jo Carlson of Dallas. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 18, 2014, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Restland Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at 12:30 PM in Restland Wildwood Chapel. Harold Hervey will be officiating.
