Howle Hal Hammond's Obituary
Howle (Hal) Gene Hammond was born in Dallas, Texas, on July 2, 1960, and passed away at his home on March 4, 2012. Hal was preceded in death by his father, Horace Gene Hammond, and godfather Al Morgan. He is survived by his children Hunter and Abbey Hammond; mother, Jimmie Mullins Hammond; sisters Carol (aka Susie) Hammond and Athena Hammond Strom (Dan), and brother Jason Hammond (Beth); wife Brenda Patterson Hammond; niece Amelia Field, nephews Brandon and Ryan Strom, and niece Pauline Strom Jones. He also left behind many loving relatives and friends. Hal was a proud Woodrow Wilson Wildcat, where he was quarterback of the football team and played short stop for the baseball team. He coached his brother Jason’s B.B.I. baseball team, the Jaguars, to the Sandy Koufax World Series, which the Jaguars won in 1984. He was graduated from the University of Texas at Dallas with a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and Political Science. He was passionate about medieval English history, baseball, football, rock’n’roll, the Beatles, the Blues, and Texas Rockabilly music. He loved to host parties, cook, drink beer, tell jokes and stories, and visit with friends and family. Hal was a born salesman. He worked for a number of years in the mortgage banking, commercial real estate, and used car industries. He served for three years as President of the Dallas County Automobile Dealers Association and was an active member of the Texas Independent Automobile Dealers Association. Hal Hammond never met a stranger, and he remembered everyone he met. He had stories about everyone he knew, and he knew everyone in East Dallas. He loved his children, wife, family, and friends with a deep and inexpressible emotion. He left us far too soon and we mourn his passing as we celebrate his life. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 9, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Restland Funeral Home, 13005 Greenville Ave., Dallas, Texas. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 10, at 4:00 p.m., at Restland. A Woodrow Wilson Class of 1978 Memorial Football Scholarship has been established in Hal’s name. Donations may be made to the Woodrow Wilson High School Community Foundation, Class of 1978 Memorial Fund, for Hal Hammond. Write check to Woodrow Wilson High School Community Foundation.
