Janet Irene Volkmann's Obituary
Janet Irene Leach Volkmann, age 89, of Dallas, Texas, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, March 24, 2012 with her family by her side. Janet was born to J. Irvin and Florence (Fuller) Leach on May 1, 1922 in Mishawaka, Indiana. She graduated from Madison School in South Bend, IN and attended South Bend College of Commerce. Janet decided to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse and attended St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago, IL, graduating in 1948. After working in South Bend for a year, Janet moved to Dallas in search of a warmer climate and bigger city. Janet worked at Baylor Hospital in Dallas as an R.N. for five years. She began attending First United Methodist Church of Dallas in 1951 and later joined the Downtowners Class, where she met the love of her life, Henry Werner Volkmann. They were married on September 17, 1955 in the Dickerson Chapel at FUMC, where they remained active members throughout their lives. She continued to work at Baylor Hospital until starting her family. Janet was a devoted wife and mother of three daughters for many years, and later a caring and loving Grandmommie to her four grandchildren. Survivors include daughter Carolyn Huggins and husband John of Dallas, TX, daughter Susan Guthrie and husband John Vagasky of Carrollton, TX, daughter Margaret Winkle and husband Greg of Carrollton, TX, granddaughter, Melissa Guthrie Wagler and husband Derrick of Vienna, VA, granddaughter Sabrina Guthrie and fiance Drake Holbrook of The Colony, TX, grandsons, Aaron Winkle and Andrew Winkle of Carrollton, TX, brother-in-law, Helmut Volkmann and wife, Magdalene of Germany, sisters-in-law Jeanette Volkmann of Flower Mound, TX, Ida Volkmann of Daly City, CA, Irma Volkmann of San Francisco, CA, nephews, Dave Jackson, Dan Jackson, nieces, Peggy Jackson Barrier and Pat Jackson, and caregiver Margaret Mansion Tudman. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Mary Jo Jackson, and her husband Henry of 56 years, who passed away on December 9, 2011. Visitation will be Sunday, April 1, 2012 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Restland Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held on Monday, April 2, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 1928 Ross Avenue, Dallas, TX 75201, with the Reverend Andy Stoker officiating. A time of fellowship will be held immediately following the service at the church, provided by the Aldersgate Class. Memorials may be made to the Aldersgate Scholarship Fund at First United Methodist Church, 1928 Ross Ave. Dallas, TX 75201.
