Julia Elizabeth (Betty) Martin's Obituary
MARTIN, JULIA ELIZABETH (BETTY) MOSLEY Betty passed away on October 2, 2009 in Tulsa, Oklahoma where she lived since 2002. Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, she was the youngest of three children from the marriage of Alfred Rochester Mosley and Lulu Wilson Mosley. Her father died at an early age so she and her mother moved in with her grandparents, George William Wilson and Cornelia Ethel Wilson. Her grandparents were an important and treasured part of her youth. Betty graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1938. Schoolmates described her as “cheerful seven days a week”. Following high school, she moved to New Jersey, staying with her beloved aunt, uncle and cousins while she continued her education at the Katherine Gibbs School in New York City. During World War II, she achieved the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in the Women’s Army Corps, serving in various support roles, including the “Wings of West Point” flight school. The training and experience she received served her well later in life. Also, during that time, she met her husband-to-be, Robert Fredric Martin. After the war, they married in New York City and later returned to Dallas where they had one child, William Wilson Martin. Unfortunately, her husband died after only 5 years of marriage. She never re-married. Following her husband’s death, Betty had to get a job to support her child and mother. That began a long career that spanned over 40 years. Betty was dedicated to her career, supporting senior executives at Delhi Taylor Oil Company and Locke, Purnell law firm. Following retirement, Betty continued to serve and help others in many ways. Her highest priorities were her family and church. A life-long Christian Scientist, she demonstrated her commitment to God in many ways. She served in virtually every capacity at church (primarily in Dallas but also in Tulsa), including reader at Sunday church services and board member. She also was a dedicated student of the Bible. Betty dearly loved her son, daughter-in-law (Bonnie), and granddaughter (Melissa) and always wanted to help them in any way possible. Her happiest times were spent with her family. Betty’s other activities included music, dancing, garden club and many fun times with her cousins at the New Jersey shore. A graveside service will be held in Betty’s honor at 10:30 am, Monday, October 5, 2009 in Restland Memorial Park, Garden “J.”
