This was the last graduation for one of her students that I went to with Z. She was a very passionate educator and mentor. I miss her so much.
I am so happy that Z was in my life. She was my Pooh and I her Piglet. We had great talks about the Goddess, poetry and more. She wrote the wonderful
poem "The Choice" for our wedding and read it at the ceremony. She also wrote a poem called "I See Women in Trees" that my husband created a video for with images of trees and various friends reading sentences from the poem. I will never forget her--especially her long baths and our meeting in the tree house in Colorado.
Lazette and I go way back.
Our mothers went to high school together. Lazette and I went to elementary school together, first Turner, then Lockhart. Unfortunately, a lapse in judgment when we decided to shoplift some 45s caused us to be sent to different junior high schools.
Six years later as I waited to board plane to go to Howard University, who shows up to board same plane, going same place?
And "Z" went all in as soon as we got there. She convinced me to run for Homecoming Court as a freshman and wouldn't you know I won. That was the essence of Lazette, supportive and encouraging in every endeavor.
Lazette's demise stunned me. I'd envisioned years of trading stories for years to come.
Rest "Z"...
REST
We will catch up later. 💛
After returning to Houston, we occasionally ran into each other and it was old home rehashing whatever had happened in the interim since we last saw each other.
Sharon & family -- You know that Lazette (Z Marie) will be missed but not forgotten! I write to celebrate our many years of friendship, sisterhood, and struggles for social justice. As Howard University roommates - both from Texas, we grew as family and activists. From our work in organizations such as Save and Change Black Schools, Youth Organization for Black Unity, and African Liberation Support Committee, we learned that change requires study and struggle. The idealism of our youth carried us through middle age. As we grew older, we continued to work for change inside and outside the many insitutions that shaped our lives. As we moved into our retirement years, we were pleased to pass the baton to a new generation of activists and support their efforts. In our recent visit to the Legacy Museum in Alabama, we took time to renew the bonds that connected us in our younger years. We celebrated the relationships we formed while at Howard University, while also acknowledging the work remaining to be done in the world wide struggles for social justice. Lazette will live on forever in our memory and hearts.
Rest in peace, Marsha (Hisani) Lillie-Blanton
