Marie Hoke Smith's Obituary
Marie Hoke Smith was born on March 24, 1926 on a farm near the Susquehanna River in Washington Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. She passed away peacefully on November 10, 2017. Marie was the fifth of nine children born to Verna Moyer Hoke and Homer J. Hoke. While attending school she lived in Elizabethville with her Aunt Laura, near the family farm. Marie’s vision of her life was larger than the valley in which she grew up and, she moved to Kansas City after high school to train for a job in the airline industry. There she met and married her husband, Thomas Stonetreet Smith who was working for Mid Continental Airlines. They moved to Dallas in 1955 when Mid Continental merged with Braniff Airlines.In 1952 Thomas M. Smith, their only child, was born in Kansas City. Marie worked in the Dallas Trade Mart, Furniture Mart and Apparel Mart managing showrooms for many years. She and her husband traveled the world with friends from Braniff. Marie was a devoted wife and mother who, while a German pragmatist, always looked for the positives in life. She was outgoing, quick to smile and always pursued new adventures. She was active in the Friends of the Dallas Arboretum, Dallas Women’s Club and Senior Art Reach. Marie is survived by her son, Thomas M. Smith, and her granddaughter, Kaitlin A. Smith who both live in Dallas.Remembrances may be made to your favorite charity or to the Alzheimer’s Association of America.
