Martha Carol Goodwin Hobgood's Obituary
Martha Carol Goodwin Hobgood passed away after a brief illness on April 5, 2018 in Dallas, Texas.Martha grew up in Belcher, Louisiana before attending Georgetown College in Kentucky. She graduated in 1953 with an Elementary Education degree and taught first grade for a year in Frankford, Kentucky. A year later she moved to Dallas and taught in the Dallas Independent School District for nine years at Obadiah Knight and Harold Budd Elementary Schools. It was during this time frame that she met the love of her life, Gordon Hobgood, at Cliff Temple Baptist Church. Martha and Gordon married on July 3, 1957. Once married, she dedicated her time and energy to building a happy home and welcomed two children to their family.Faith, family and fellowship were all important to Martha. Friendships from Cliff Temple Baptist and FBC Richardson grew through the years as their bridge groups were more about friendship. These friends played together and supported each other as they experienced difficult losses within their group over more recent years. They have shared their lives with each other and were close by when a friend was needed. They became family.Family times at their lake house in East Texas were a delight of her heart where she always longed to return. She loved to bring some of East Texas back to Dallas in the form of Tyler Roses. She would dry them and turn them into beautiful arrangements for lucky family and friends. Rocking chairs on the porch, enjoying a hot cup of coffee on a chilly morning or a cold iced tea on a hot summer day, peaceful times interrupted by the clamor of excited grandkids, who each landed a 5 pound Bass on the same day. A stop by Ham Orchards seemed to seal the perfect trip on the way home. We have so many memories of a mother, a Mimi, and a wife whom her loved ones will always cherish.Martha was preceded in death by her parents, Effie Clyde Rawls and Baylus Rhodymon Goodwin and siblings Jeanette Anders and Baylus Goodwin. She is survived by her husband of 61 years Gordon Hobgood of Dallas, sister Tena Wash of Palestine, daughter Amy Castleberry and husband Craig of Plano, and son Bill Hobgood and wife Debbie of Lewisville, grandchildren Emily Hood of Dallas, Jordan Hobgood and wife Bronwyn of Bedford, Matthew Hood of Denton, and Morgan Hobgood of Waco.A Memorial Service to celebrate Martha’s life will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday April 10th at First Baptist Church of Richardson, Texas located at 1001 N. Central Expressway, Richardson, Texas, at Arapaho Rd. An informal reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the First Baptist Church of Richardson Landes Scholarship Fund, or the Guidestone Financial Mission Dignity Fund. www.missiondignity.org.
