Mildred Flint's Obituary
Mildred Rutherford Flint was born October 23, 1905 in Terrell, Texas, daughter of Tom and Martha Jane Rutherford. She passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at the age of 102 with her loving family by her side. After graduating from Terrell High School, Mildred attended Baylor University in 1924 and in 1925 transferred to Parsons School of Design in New York City. Several years later, she married her Baylor sweetheart, Austin Flint, and had one child, Jane Flint. On the weekends, during WWII, Mildred and Austin hosted soldiers who were training for the Normandy landing, in addition to organizing and operating a USO center. Mildred received Girl Scout and American Cancer awards for her volunteerism, helped to establish the Lena Pope Home in Ft. Worth, and was a member of the Heritage Club at Baylor University. In her 60s, Mildred studied Montessori in California, received her Montessori certification in London, England, and later taught in Cali, Colombia and in several Montessori schools in Dallas. She wrote beautiful poetry and short stories. She loved her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, her church, her family, and her friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Austin Flint of Cisco, Texas; and brother, Patrick Rutherford. Mildred Flint is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Joe Lyon; step-granddaughters and husbands, Vicki and Richard Fink, Cindy and Chuck Denton; six great-grandchildren; and care-giver, Marilyn McCarthy. Visitation: Friday, February 22nd at Restland Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral service: Saturday, February 23rd at Wilshire Baptist Church, 4316 Abrams Rd., Dallas, at 10 a.m., followed by internment at Oakland Cemetery, Terrell, Texas. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Baylor University.
