Mora Genevieve McGuire Morris' Obituary
Mora Genevieve McGuire Morris, known as “Gena” and “Nana,” was born on April 3, 1935 and passed away peacefully on July 25, 2024. Gena was the daughter of JB (James Bowden) and Mora McGuire of Seymour, TX. A graduate of Seymour High School, she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics Education from Texas Technological College in 1957 and was active in Gamma Phi Beta sorority.
Gena married George Morris on June 9, 1957. She cherished her roles as a wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker and volunteer.
Through the years Gena was actively involved in many volunteer roles. In Lubbock, she was on the Methodist Hospital Board, the Community Planning Council of United Way, and the Texas Tech Dean’s Advisory Council of the College of Health & Human Sciences. She also served as President of the Monterey High School PTA and of the Women’s Division of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce, and was active in the Lubbock Women’s Club, the Junior League of Lubbock, and P.E.O.
Prior to moving to Dallas in 2019, Gena and George were active members of the Hi-Robinson Sunday School class at First Methodist Church in Lubbock for over 50 years.
Gena loved quality time with family and friends, a home-cooked meal, a new dessert recipe, all things family and grandkids, supper club, bridge club minus the bridge, a beautiful and cared-for home, and creative projects. Gena/Nana always provided a loving and listening landing place for her girls and their friends, spouses, children and grandchildren. Her friends were often the recipients of her culinary talents in the form of a homemade loaf of bread.
Gena was passionate about her family, and on weekends and vacations, she and George and their family enjoyed spending time at their lake house at Lake Kemp. After George’s retirement he and Gena were seldom apart, and enjoyed doing everything together. Gena was a devoted, caring and supportive wife.
Gena is described by her friends and family as loving, a wonderful cook, artistic, gracious, elegant, hospitable, classy, sophisticated, loved to dance, organized/attentive to detail, creative, thoughtful, selfless, generous, the best homemade cheese roll maker, kind, a hard worker, giving, caring, full of fun, light-hearted, patient, a Red Raider, talented, admirable, a genuine friend, happy, considerate, positive, loyal, energetic, and beautiful. As one grandchild put it, “Nana Can Do Anything.” Gena was a strong, virtuous woman who exemplified a life lived to the fullest.
Genevieve McGuire Morris left a legacy of love and is survived by her three children and their spouses, Melinda and Gary Wright, Dianne and Roger Jones, and Annette and Jeff Wise. Additionally, Gena is survived by seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren: Justin and Callie, Joy and Emilia Jones; Tracy (Wright), Daniel, Luke, Abby and Elliott Gilada; Jill Jones and Brent Yontz; Katy (Wright), Alan, Henry and Hannah Kate Burgess; Lane, Joni, Scottie, Sloane and Molly Wise; Greg, Bonnie, Jay, Brock and Dean Wright; and Alanna (Wise), Beau, Maryn and Lainey McNeill. Gena is also survived by numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
Gena is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, George Morris.
A family gathering celebrating the life of George and Gena and honoring their legacy of love will be held in Dallas, Texas.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the loving care from the caregivers at Hillcrest House and Three Oaks Hospice of Dallas, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hi-Robinson Sunday School class at First Methodist Church in Lubbock, Texas or to the Texas Tech College of Health & Human Science.
