Peter Daniel Seymour's Obituary
Peter Daniel Seymour passed away on October 19th, 2020 at the age of 84.
Pete was born December 9th, 1935 in Wilmington, DE. At a young age he moved to New Rochelle, NY where he grew up with a strong love of sailing and the ocean.
Pete met his future wife Barbara in White Plains, where they both worked at Alexander’s Department Store. After marriage and honeymooning on Long Island Sound by sailboat, he moved his bride to Louisiana where he attended Northwestern University to become a math and science teacher. After graduating, Pete and Barbara moved to Texas, where they lived happily for the next 50 years.
It is difficult to describe Pete without sailing. He began sailing at 8 years of age and there was nary a year since when Pete did not have at least one boat. Rarely a weekend passed that you would not find him on a boat, always willing to race, teach others what he knew, or learn something new himself. A gifted sailor and conversationalist made him a an honored member of his favorite Corinthian Sailing Club on White Rock Lake.
Kindness was at the core of Pete’s being. Despite his fierce demeanor and quick temper on a race course, he was at heart a gentle person, who cared deeply for all living things. He nurtured people as they are, and loved watching people grow into their own. He was maker of things. There wasn’t a project he couldn’t finish, a thing he couldn’t repair, a boat he couldn’t save. He disliked waste and never missed an opportunity to drill a hole in something to improve its usefulness.
He was an endlessly devoted husband and father. Barbara and Pete were two sides of the same coin. They traveled the world together, and now are traveling together once again. Pete left this earth too soon and he will not slip from his family and friends’ hearts and memories easily. I will miss you, Dad. You are the best friend, teacher, and father a daughter could ever want.
Pete is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara. He is survived by his elder brother Dr. John Seymour and wife Joan, his younger sister Margaret, his daughter Laurie and husband John, and many nephews and nieces.
Donations in Pete’s memory can be made to the Junior Sailing Program of the Corinthian Sailing Club c/o Treasurer (www.cscsailing.org), the USO (www.uso.org), or the Dallas Area Parkinson’s Society (www.daps.us).
