Roy Augustine Martinez's Obituary
Raul “Roy” Augustine Martinez was born in Dallas, Texas on May 8, 1925.He entered the Navy in 1942. He served in the Pacific Rim as a 20 mm gunner aboard the gallant aircraft carrier USS Altamaha. There is a story to tell about his service during WWII, but for the most part, he didn’t want to tell it. He sustained a shrapnel wound and survived days at sea on a raft in shark-infested waters. Although he was just a teenager at war, he did say later in life that he really enjoyed being in the Navy and serving his country. He is a lifelong member of the VFW Post 6796. After the service, he found work in manufacturing, which became his lifelong profession. He worked for a couple of the top women’s apparel companies in Dallas, as a production manager.In 1959, he married Maria Weiser and had 3 children with her – Michelle, Elizabeth, and Jordana. They had a home in Dallas for over 30 years.Roy was a Golden Gloves boxer in his younger years, played soccer well into his 40’s and played golf for as long as anyone can remember. He was very good at all of them and brought home many trophies over the years. He is a lifelong member of the Pan American Golf Association of Dallas and continued to play golf well into his late 80’s. He was also a very good dancer. One of his first jobs was as a dance instructor. He loved to dance. In fact, it is dancing that led him to Lilia, who has been his wife for 3 years.Roy has seen a lot in his 93 years and was only 5 days shy of seeing is 94th birthday. He was a very quiet man, but when he spoke, he was extremely witty. He was always telling jokes and had a way about him that made everyone laugh. He was very charming. Roy passed away peacefully on May 3 at his home in Mesquite, Texas. We will miss him dearly.Roy is preceded in death by his parents, his Aunt and Uncle, his 8 siblings, and his 3rd wife, Margie Lee.He is survived by his 3 children and their spouses, 3 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren; as well as his current wife, Lilia Bowman Martinez, and her family.The services for Roy Martinez are 5/14 in Wildwood Chapel11:30 Visitation12:30 ServicesBurial to follow services.
