Mrs. Clay was a rare gem. She’s one of those teachers I compare all of my children’s teachers too. Those of us had the privilege to learn from her were truly the lucky ones. She loved her job and we were all the better for it. Some of my most favorite memories were reciting the Lord’s Prayer in Olde English (and I still remember it) or acting out Animal Farm. I remember how she loved and treasured her friends. I hope she knew just how impactful she was as on all our lives. She was special.
I worked with Sammie many years ago at Berkner High School. She was so kind and helpful to me as a fellow English teacher. The beautiful quilt she gave me when I married is still on the bed in my guest bedroom. I have thought of her often and am so sorry to hear of her passing.
Dear Jack, Dub & family, We wish to express our sorrow for your loss. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Love, Dianne, LaRee & families

Dub, We are so saddened to learn of Sammie’s passing. She was truly precious and unique. She had great impact not only on her students but on those of us who had the pleasure of working with her and counting her as a sweet friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the rest of the family. Pam and Taber Bearden
I send my sympathy to your family–may you find peace as you celebrate the life of a remarkable woman and teacher! I remember interviewing her for an article in the school newspaper at Berkner and feeling lucky to be able to talk to her for a long time. She was not only interesting; she was also interested–in the world, in literature, and in her students. She taught me to love literature and encouraged me to study English for my undergraduate and graduate work.
I have thought often of Sammie the last several weeks. She has always been one of my favorite people. Prayers of comfort for her family.
My sincere condolences on behalf of the Loftin family. She was such a great teacher. I feel lucky to have been in her class in 11th grade. Peace. Bob Loftin Jr.
Sammie was an excellent teacher and a quality person. She will be missed by all who knew her. She will continue to be an inspiration for all of those entering the teaching profession. Please accept our most sincere condolences.
