Stacy Earl Mathis' Obituary
MATHIS, STACY E. peacefully entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, while surrounded by his beloved family on January 9, 2014. He was born on February 2, 1941, to Reverend Charles Robert and Lannie Eutice Mathis in Lubbock, Texas. His father was a Baptist minister, and Stacy spent his early years living in small communities in West Texas. While in high school, Stacy was an outstanding football player playing on six-man football teams. He graduated from Goree High School in 1959. Following his senior season, he was offered a full athletic scholarship to Baylor University. Stacy was a starter for the 1963 Baylor team. He made the Honorable Mention All Southwest Conference Team in 1963. After completing his college football career and graduating with a BBA from Baylor in 1964, he signed a contract to play Canadian Football League. In 2007 Stacy was honored by being inducted into the Texas Six-Man Football Hall of Fame. After football, Stacy returned to Texas and fulfilled his military obligation, and he became an officer in the National Guard. He began his work career in the insurance industry in 1966 where he worked for several major property casualty companies including Travelers, Royal, and Kemper Insurance until his retirement in 2007. On January 9, 1971, Stacy married Betty Ann Crawford of Uvalde, Texas, his devoted wife of forty-three years. Stacy is survived by his wife, Betty Ann, his son Michael and wife Downie Mathis of Dallas, Texas, his daughter Allison and husband Jon Kaumo of Tyler, Texas, and his daughter Meredith and husband Michael Curtis of Richardson, Texas. Stacy is survived by four grandchildren including Will Mathis, Catherine Ann Mathis, Neil Kaumo, and Jonah Curtis. He is also survived by one brother, Mack Mathis, of Statesville, North Carolina. Stacy was predeceased by his parents, Charles R. and Lannie E. Mathis, his sister, Flora Grace Bennett, and his brother Roy Mathis. Stacy loved Baylor University, and he was an avid supporter of the Baylor Bears. Stacy will always be remembered for his zest for life. He loved Jesus Christ, his family, and his many friends. Stacy blessed the lives of everyone who knew him. Stacy loved his church, and he was a long time member of the First Baptist Church Richardson. Visitation will be Sunday, January 12, 2014, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Restland Funeral Home. Graveside services will be Monday, January 13, 2014, at 11:30 AM at Restland Memorial Park. Memorial Service will be held at the First Baptist Church Richardson at 2:00 PM, Monday, January 13, 2014.
