Susan Zhang Shiow C Liu's Obituary
Susan Zhang Shiow Chwan Liu, a resident of Dallas, TX, passed away on August 4, 2023, at the age of 85, in the comfort of her home due to complications arising from pancreatic cancer. Her devoted husband, Thomas Ta Hai Liu, was at her side as she transitioned, reuniting her with her beloved parents, family, and friends in Heaven. Susan was born on April 2, 1938, in Shandong, China.
Growing up in Seoul, Korea, Susan's family, comprised of three sisters and two brothers, had relocated there during the Chinese Civil War. It was in Seoul that she encountered the love of her life, Thomas Liu. A brief courtship led them to marriage on November 20, 1956. Over the years, their family expanded to include three children: Steven (born in 1960), Jeff (born in 1963), and Jimmy (born in 1971).
In pursuit of a better life and fresh opportunities, Susan, Thomas, and their children immigrated to the United States in 1975. They eventually settled in Dallas, TX, where they purchased their first home and raised their three sons.
Susan was undoubtedly the matriarch of the family, a fact known to all, as she and Thomas managed a family-owned restaurant for nearly two decades. Their tireless work ethic was fueled by their determination to offer their children a brighter future. Susan's own childhood had been marked by the hardships of two major wars: the Chinese Civil War and the Korean War. Without graduating high school due to the tumultuous times and growing up amidst economic challenges, she displayed resourcefulness in managing and operating the restaurant. After almost two decades of dedication, she finally found the opportunity to relax, relishing the rewards of her labor alongside Thomas, and devoting more time to her children and grandchildren.
Renowned for her beauty, love, and nurturing spirit, Susan was a doting mother and grandmother, as well as a steadfast wife of sixty-six years. She found joy in gardening, cooking, and extending hospitality to anyone who crossed her threshold. Spending quality time with her grandchildren, especially during their infancy, brought her immense happiness. Susan was also a faithful churchgoer and an enthusiastic traveler.
Her departure leaves a significant void in the lives of those who were fortunate to know her. Her memory will be cherished for her benevolence and unwavering desire to provide nourishment and care to all.
Susan is survived by her husband, Thomas Liu, and her three children: Steven (of Frisco), Jeff (of Plano), and Jimmy (of Coppell, TX). She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren: Jeremy, Matthew, Briana, Austin, Christian, and Ryan.
A celebration of Susan's life and a memorial service will be held at 10:00am on Friday, August 11, 2023, at North Dallas Funeral Home, 2710 Valley View Ln., Dallas, TX 75234, immediately followed by burial at Restland Cemetery (Garden of Binnerri), 13005 Greenville Ave, Dallas, TX 75243. Subsequently, all are invited to the reception at Seoul Garden Restaurant, 2502 Royal Ln., Dallas, TX 75229.
