Thelma Jean Carter's Obituary
Thelma Jean Carter, 85, of Lowell, Indiana, passed away January 22, 2023, with her family by her side.
Thelma Jean was born February 7, 1937, in Coeburn, VA to Buena Vista and James Allen Meade. She graduated from Coeburn High School and went on to enlist in the Women's Army Corps as a clerk typist in 1957, one of her proudest achievements.
She married Edward Lee Carter on September 1, 1960, her beloved husband of 62 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Buena Vista Meade and James Allen Meade; brother, Dallas M. Meade; sister, Sharon G. Harvey (Meade).
Survivors include her devoted husband, Edward L. Carter; daughters, Tammy L. Meade and Kim Carter Dickman both of Dallas; grandchildren, Peyton L. Dickman, Sydney P. Dickman and Jacob W. Dickman all of Dallas; brother, James "Bucky" Meade of Coeburn, VA; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Thelma Jean enjoyed reading & crocheting. She was an avid Dallas Cowboys’ fan and cheered them on, win or lose.
The greatest joys of her life were her family; her husband, Ed; her daughters, Tammy and Kim, and especially her three grandchildren, Peyton, Sydney and Jacob - they were truly the light of her life.
Her quick wit and contagious smile endeared her to everyone who was fortunate enough to know her. A deeply faithful Christian lady, she was also fiercely loyal and protective of those she loved.
Thelma was a true Steel Magnolia who served as an inspiration to young women through her service in the Women's Army Corps during a time when women in service was rarity.
She will be missed tremendously by all that knew and loved her.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Woundedwarriorsproject.org
