Thelma Jean Hammett's Obituary
Thelma Jean Hammett was born on Sunday, September 9, 1928, in Farmerville, Louisiana to Thelma M. (nee Everett) and Julius N. Compton ("Jube"). She passed away on June 26, 2025.
She grew up on her family's farm 7 miles NW of Farmerville, La. Before her Senior Year in High School her family moved to West Monroe, LA. There, she graduated from Ouachita Parish High School in 1944 after completing 11 grades of school because there wasn't a 12th grade back then. Upon graduation, aged 16, she moved to Dallas, Texas, to live with her aunt, Louise Malone and attend Draughon's Business School.
During her Senior year of High School, she met and fell in love with Artis B. Hammett. He dropped out of High School in their senior year to join the US Army Air Corps. While he was in the Air Force, Jean worked as a bookkeeper in Dallas. Upon his completion of service, they were married on June 19, 1949, in Farmerville, La.
With the arrival of their 1st daughter, Susan Lynn, Jean became a stay-at-home mom. Thier 2nd daughter, Arta Jeannine was born 5 years later.
Jean was very active in her Church, Second Baptist Dallas, for the 65+ years before it closed its doors. She was one of the oldest and longest members at the time of its closing. She had many wonderful friends that she traveled, dined, and ran around with.
After being widowed at the age of 48, she assumed the care and overseeing of the rental properties she and Art had acquired.
She enjoyed being a Nanan to her two Grandsons and especially loved being a Nana to her 6 Great-Grandsons.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thelma and Jube Compton; her brothers, Norred G. Compton (infant) and Julius L. Compton ("Sonny"); her husband of 27 years, Art Hammett; her best friends, Anna Fugitt, Lou Millsap, and Marie Rambo; and a special friend, John Fulter.
She is survived by her daughters, Susan Higgins (Richard) and Jeannine Schweers (Kenny); two grandsons, Jared Schweers (Kristen) and their sons Cater, Cole, and Cason, and Brandon Schweers (Kristin) and their sons, Jamison, Elliott, and Benjamin; her sister Sandra Compton Nelson; one nephew and three nieces; her husband's nieces and nephews; several cousins; and her best friend and neighbor, Joyce Broadway and best friend Pearl Mills.
She leaves behind in our hearts and minds wonderful memories of a life well lived.
