Verna Lou Moore Leftwich's Obituary
Verna Lou (Moore) Leftwich was born on June 13, 1924, in Grand Saline, Texas to parents Vernon and Alma Moore. She graduated from Grand Saline High School and later from North Texas State Teachers College in 1944, majoring in Home Economics and Child Care Development.
After teaching in Fort Worth, Texas, she married Staff Sargeant James R. Leftwich on March 11, 1945, who returned after serving two years overseas. After living in Corpus Christi while he was stationed at the Naval Base, they settled in Dallas in 1946 and joined Tyler Street Methodist Church. Lou worked for Earl Hughes Chevrolet Company for two years until her son James Michael was born on December 22, 1948. She worked part- time for them until her daughter Cynthia Lou was born on July 17, 1952. The family moved to Walnut Hill area of Dallas in 1954 and joined Walnut Hill Methodist Church, where she remained a member until her death.
While the children were growing up, Lou was involved in PTA, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, and later went to work part- time for the Liberty Steel Company. When the children were grown, she began working full time at Liberty Steel Company, where she stayed for 32 years.
In 1968, Lou and James took square dance lessons and joined Wheel & Deal Square Dance Club, enjoying many weekend trips, along with State and National Conventions. After retiring, Lou was a telephone volunteer for Walnut Hill Church served as President and Circle Leader of United Methodist Women, was a member of Methodist Hospital Auxiliary and a member of Cosmos Review Book Club.
Following the death of her husband James in 2012, Lou moved into Five Star Premier Residences in 2015 and enjoyed an active social life until shortly before her death.
Lou is preceded in death by parents Vernon & Alma Moore, husband James Leftwich, daughter Cynthia Bledsoe, grandson Loren Leftwich and brother Edwin Moore. She is Survived by son Michael (Ellen), 3 grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter, 1 great great granddaughter, sister-in-law and great grandson in-law
In Lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to be made to Walnut Hill Methodist Church or Five Star Employee Appreciation Fund.
