Virgil Albert Stites' Obituary
V. A. “Joe” Stites of Dallas, age 92, died peacefully Wednesday, morning, August 8, 2012, at Sunrise of Hillcrest. A native of Oklahoma, Joe had lived in Dallas since 1960, where he was a member of Park Cities Baptist Church for 52 years. A graduate of Tulsa Business College, he retired from HUD after previously working for FHA. Joe was a veteran of World War II, enlisting in the U.S. Navy following the attack on Pearl Harbor, and serving in South Africa and British East Africa, now Kenya. He was chosen for the V-12 program and sent to the University of Oklahoma, and later to Pearl Harbor, attaining the rank of Chief Yeoman. After marrying the love of his life and having 2 children he was recalled during the Korean Conflict, serving aboard the flagship as “writer” for the commander of the Seventh Fleet. Joe loved children, dogs, and puns, but his wife and family most of all. He is survived by his wife of nearly 66 years, Anne Elmore Stites of Dallas; sons, Rob Stites, of Arlington and wife Mary Louise Stites; Tom Stites of Dallas, and wife Kathy Stites; daughters, Stevvi Cook of Bean Station, Tennessee, and husband James Cook; Marggi Monsees, of Schertz, Tx; grandchildren, Frank Ed Prochaska, Worth Anne Herrell, Meredith Stites, Steven Stites, Ted Stanley, Kevin Monsees, Kathryn Monsees, Sarah Stites, and great-grandchildren Tank, Luke and Kyle Prochaska, Mack and Houston Herrell; and brother Fred Stites of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 12, 2012, from 4-6pm at Restland Funeral Home.
