Wanda L Baker's Obituary
Wanda L. Baker joined the angels in heaven March 22, after a courageous battle with long-term illness. She was born April 7, 1928 in Ellis County, Texas and moved to Dallas at the age of six with her parents and two brothers. She majored in office management and secretarial skills at North Dallas High School and Baylor University. Her career spanned 50 years and she felt fortunate to have spent the last 27 years at Allied Finance Company as Executive Secretary to the President. Wanda worked in the beautiful Turtle Creek area where the employees enjoyed a “family-type” atmosphere, making for lifelong friendships. She remembered with great fondness her friends of those years and they kept in touch as much as possible throughout their retirement. She took great pride in her job and making a happy home. Wanda was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, mother-in-law and caring friend. She became a Christian at an early age and lived her life with the highest principles and integrity. As a teenager, she became a member of Trinity Baptist Church in the Young People’s Department. She married her “Navel Officer” Bill following World War II. They were blessed with two sons and greatly enjoyed socializing with other young church couples following the evening worship services. After moving to another part of the city, Wanda and her husband moved their membership to Highland Baptist Church where she was Superintendent of the children’s five-year-old Primary Sunday School Department with the support of her husband and children. That was one of the greatest inspirations of her life. As happy and fulfilling as Wanda’s life had been, the next phase brought great joy – her two beloved grandsons. “Nonnie”, as she was affectionately known to her grandsons, had a special depth of love for each child individually and she cherished the many happy experiences they shared together, Her most joyful and fulfilling times were spent with her family. Wanda’s parents Edith and J.O. Woodard, were members of the Wilshire Baptist Church and they invited Wanda’s family to visit. The family was impressed with the service and the friendliness of the people, so they moved their membership to Wilshire- resulting in a 40+ year association with this wonderful body of believers. After a few years of absence due to illness, Wanda and Bill joined the Senior Adult Sunday School Department of Wilshire. These Christian people really cared about one another and it was the best therapy Wanda could have had. She had great moral and Spiritual qualities and will be deeply missed by all those lives she touched. Left to cherish her memory are sons and daughters-in-law: Ron and Mary Baker and Ken and Martha Baker; grandsons and granddaughters-in law Scott and Michelle Baker and Mark and Abi Baker; and grandson Zeke Baker; dedicated brothe,r Bill G. Woodard and wife, Kay; special nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Her wonderful parents mentioned above, older brother, John O. Woodard, Jr. and her husband, Bill preceded Wanda in death. The family will receive visitors at 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM Thursday, March 26, 2015 at Restland Funeral Home. Services will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, March 27, 2015 in The Wildwood Chapel at Restland Memorial Park. Interment will follow immediately at the family plot in Sparkman Hillcrest Memorial Park, where she will be laid to rest next to the love of her life, Bill. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75238 at Restland Road.
