Irene Gloria Skurla
Birth Date: September 19, 1932Death Date: December 3, 2018
Passed away on December 3, 2018 at age 86 and is together with her Lord and beloved family and friends who have gone before her. Born in New York she loved all things that New York had to offer. She started working at AT&T in Manhattan at the age of 18. Her lifelong love of volunteering began as a USO Hostess where she met her soon to be husband, John, on an army base in Georgia during the Korean conflict. They married in 1956 and moved to the Catskill Mountains of New York and started their family. In the mid-60s, the family transferred to Dallas and soon set up their home in Richardson. In the early 1970s, she went back to work at Southwestern Bell as a draftsman, helping to place all the cables in most of the buildings in downtown Dallas. She loved SWBT and all her friends there. Upon retirement, she became a full-time volunteer for the SWBT / AT&T Pioneers. She loved handing out dictionaries to elementary school children, making care bears for children in hospitals, supporting Junior Achievement and spending time with Angel Flight. She was awarded the prestigious Pioneer Volunteer of the Year award. She also volunteered at the Richardson Senior Center, Campbell Green Center and enjoyed her years as a Red Hatter. In her spare time, she volunteered at St Paul Catholic School. She loved being the center of attention and the life of the party. She loved knowing everyone’s birthday; as she instinctively knew behaviors, likes and dislikes, by just knowing someone’s birth date. As she aged she remained feisty, sometimes demanding, but she loved her family and her friends with all her heart. She was a strong Catholic woman who was known for pulling out a prayer card and giving them out to anyone she came in contact. Whatever the issue,
sickness, job, or situation, she had a prayer card or a saint card that she would hand out readily. Preceding her in death are her parents, sister, and husband John. Surviving her are her children, son Richard (his wife, Carolyn,) and daughter Patti, grandchildren Shandalynn (her husband, Kelby), Melissa and Philip and great grandchildren, Jillian, Skylar and Trent, and so many dear friends who are our family. Many thanks to the Renew and ACTS family at St. Paul the Apostle, our very special neighbors, and all who have supported our family.
