Alexander Scott Gilmour's Obituary
Alexander Scott Gilmour, beloved son, brother, grandson and friend, passed away on September 27, 2025, in Dallas, Texas, at the age of 27. Alex is mourned by his parents, Colleen and Scott Gilmour, sister, Sophie Gilmour, grandmother, Martha Gilmour, and many relatives and friends.
Alex was a clever, creative, quietly confident, and gentle person throughout his life. Growing up, he enjoyed playing team sports year-round and proved himself to be a natural volleyball and tennis player. Always curious and observant, he was drawn to science during his childhood but ultimately found his passion in the arts. In high school, he established himself as a memorable character actor in school plays, a quick-witted addition to the class improv troupe, and a keen dark room photographer. But his greatest love was always making films, and through this collaborative work, he found his community. While studying film in college, Alex explored his interest in animation and grew into an innovative motion graphics artist. He wanted to develop a distinctive style and was excited about new aesthetic and technical possibilities.
Alex’s film teacher and mentor recently shared his thoughts about him: “From the earliest days of Alex being in filmmaking classes it was clear that he had an intelligence and visual acuity far beyond his years. That never wavered. When he graduated, in his senior goodbye I said he was the most gifted visual storyteller I’ve ever taught, and I stand by that today.”
In a friend’s words, “Alex was the glue of our friend group. We all loved him and were always trying to keep up with him. We admired how he just seemed to be immune to self-consciousness and was always completely himself – the consummate jokester, totally brilliant, and deeply kind. I admired him as an artist and that his immense talent was complemented by his humility and self-possession. That has and will continue to be an inspiration to me for a long time.”
Alex attended The Lamplighter School and Greenhill School, both in Dallas, Texas. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts – Film and Television from the Tisch School of Arts at New York University.
Alex’s passing leaves all who love him with heavy hearts, never to be the same without him. A memorial reception honoring Alex’s life will be held on October 23, 2025, from 6-8 pm at Winfrey Point, 950 East Lawther Drive, Dallas, Texas.
