Alma Duane (Bell) Verner's Obituary
Alma Duane Bell Verner, 99, of Richardson, TX died peacefully in her sleep at approximately 3:30 a.m. Monday morning, January 17, 2022.
Duane was born on January 12th, 1923 at 3:30 a.m. to Alfred Jewell and Alma Viola Bell in Brownfield, TX. After graduating from Meadow High School in 1940, she went on to graduate from Draughon’s Business College, in Lubbock, TX.
Duane married her high school sweetheart, Afton, in 1941 and they were married for 76 wonderful years. Soon after, while Afton was fighting overseas in WWII, Duane worked at the Army Air Corps Base in Lubbock, TX, as a secretary for Army Air Corps officers.
After the war they moved to New Mexico where Afton completed college and they had their first child. They moved often with Afton’s work and lived in El Paso, Oklahoma City, Little Rock, Memphis, Atlanta and Richardson, TX. Along the way they had four more children. Duane dedicated her life to being a wonderful wife and mother. She excelled at supporting her husband, kids and family in everything they did.
She loved gardening and cooking and she also ran the household and worked side-by-side with Afton in his business. Duane was always giving her time and helping those in need. She was a Sunday school teacher to 2 year olds for 30 years and a member of Waterview Church of Christ for over 50 years. She dearly loved her family, friends, and her church, especially her L.O. A.group. We loved her dearly and will all miss her greatly.
Duane was predeceased by her father and mother, husband Afton, brother Terrell Bell, sister Marjean Harman, son Von, and son-in-law, Michael Pocock. She is survived and lovingly remembered by her sister Janice Hulse, her sons, Glen (Jane), Jerry (Mimi), Randal (Dawn) daughter, Marjean and daughter-in-law, Julia (Von). And, fourteen grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
