Althea C. Adams' Obituary
Althea Coston Adams was born on June 30, 1935 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was the second and youngest daughter of George and Carrie Coston. She graduated from West Philadelphia High School in 1952. She then attended North Carolina A&T where she met her husband, James R. Adams. She subsequently graduated from Cheyney State University with an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education. She furthered her education and obtained a Master of Education and Library Media Specialist from Auburn University.
Althea began her professional career as a Media Specialist for the United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare. Upon her husband’s retirement from active duty of the U.S. Army they moved to Dallas, Texas. She continued her Media Specialist career with the Dallas Independent School District and retired after twenty-four years on August 31, 2000.
Althea was a faithful member of Hamilton Park United Methodist Church and served as a member of the Staff Pastor Parish Relations Committee, Nominations Committee, and the Church Council. She is a member of American Association of University Women, Dallas Retired Teachers Association, Texas Retired Teachers Association, Dallas Association of Retired School Librarians and Texas Library Association.
Althea was initiated in Beta Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated in 1976 at Tuskegee, Alabama. Upon moving to Dallas, Texas she became an active member of Alpha Xi Omega Chapter. Althea has served as Chapter Treasurer, Chapter Parliamentarian, Chairperson of the By-Laws Committee, Chairperson of the Social Committee, Parliamentarian of Alpha Key Alliance, served on many other Chapter, Regional and National Committees. She was a Life Member and Silver Star Honoree.
On February 25, 2023, Our Lord opened His arms and the gates of heaven and welcomed Althea Adams to be reunited with her beloved husband of sixty-three years who preceded her in death, Dr. Lieutenant Colonel James R. Adams. She was also preceded in death by her parents, George and Carrie Coston, and her sister Helena Brown.
She is survived by her three sons: James, his wife Romona and his daughter April, her children Cedrik, Marquette and Remicka; Christopher; and Michael, his wife Laura and their children Ashley and Spencer. She is also survived by her nieces, Karen Davis, Karla Moore, Joyce Young, Debbie Adams-Bey, and Brenda Jackson, her nephew, Bradley Brooks; and lifetime family friends, Eddie and Lynda Mayberry, Joseph and Herdicine Nash, the many cousins and relatives of Pennsylvania and North Carolina; the in-laws of Beaumont and Houston Texasand Iowa; as well as the congregation of Hamilton Park United Methodist Church.
