Andrea was an angel on earth. Her acts of kindness knew no bounds.
I will never forget her kindness to me and my husband and her innumerable deliveries of food to my door. Her cooking was extraordinary in a way unknown today. Anything she made in her kitchen, the center of her home and family, was made with care and attention to details: simple food, everyday food, but always delicious. From her handmade tortillas to her lethal beans, she made every meal a feast, and a selfless act of giving. Her sometimes booming voice spoke one language, and her food spoke another.
Andrea told great stories about growing up in a large Tejano family. She loved road trips and took many as a child, with her mother behind the wheel, and her siblings layered into any available car. This spirit of adventure stayed with her throughout most of her life. She read the newspaper in the morning and if something caught her attention she told Leo to get ready. They were taking a day trip to see something she read about. Off they would go on an adventure (sometimes 12 hours) that usually included food and always included doing something nice for someone along the way. Her later stories always started with the year, so they began with, “In 07”, or, “In 09”. When you heard that beginning, you knew something interesting was to follow.
She loved her work as an Ambassador at DFW airport. While she hated to fly herself, she met flights from Central or South America. She answered questions for many of these first time, frightened travelers, got them talking (never a problem for Andrea), and if she found out they were hungry and had little money, she brought them to her home in Irving to feed them, before returning them to the airport for their next flight.
Andrea had an expansive memory (her ‘computer’) of Mexican proverbs that she could pull out to finish a story. Most of my many conversations with Andrea ended with her English translation of a Mexican proverb, “If the worms can live under the earth, we can live on top of the earth.”
Andrea, you are now above the earth, free of pain, in a place of great peace and beauty, a true angel to everyone you touched. Your acts of kindness will live on, a lesson in giving for everyone to follow.
Rest in peace, my dear friend.
