Angela Meng's Obituary
Angela Longqiao Meng passed away on Monday, July 18, at the Medical Center of Plano. Her brilliant life was claimed by depression and suicide. She was 22 years old. Angela is survived by her father, Liming, her mother, Ting, and her sister, Diana. Angela was born on May 15, 1994 in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada, to loving parents and an adoring older sister. From the beginning, Angela captivated everyone with her personality and spirit. Angela loved to perform even before she learned to talk, babbling and banging her fists on the piano. She was never afraid to wander off on her own and always found her way back. When we reminded her not to do something, Angela would do it anyways, the spark in her eyes as she rebelled. After growing up in Vancouver, Angela and her family moved to Keller, TX where she started school. She challenged her classmates to Pokémon battles, played the piano, flute and piccolo, immersed herself into the worlds of Harry Potter and Stanley Yelnats IV, and loved each of her pet goldfishes, six chickens, and countless Neopets. While attending high school in Plano, TX, she became a prolific fanfiction writer and a sketch artist, loved Biology and Art History, defended her League of Legends ranking, found her passion in international affairs through Academic WorldQuest, and vowed to become a cat-mom while she volunteered at Second Chance SPCA. When she attended college at the University of Texas at Austin, Angela became known in her student organizations as a leader and a mother-figure, an insomniac baker, and a lunch buddy who never let you pay the bill. She sang her heart out as a choir member in the Madrigal Dinner production and always performed the Moose song, if you dared to ask. Angela fell in love with Stéphane Lambiel and Kim Yuna, SHINee and Epik High, and the German and Spanish national football teams, and easily persuaded others to do so as well. She studied abroad in Paris, where she met locals amused by her French, spent days wandering the Louvre, and sketched and drank wine by the Seine River. She also finally fulfilled her dream as a full-time cat-mom last year when she adopted her Kookie. To anyone fortunate enough to know her, Angela was incredibly smart, wickedly funny, defiant, spontaneous, idealistic, and beautiful. She took better care of others than herself, never one to let someone fall through the cracks, always there to support her friends and even strangers she barely knew. We lost count of so many numbers. The number of food deliveries she made for those buried in their studies. The number of nights she lost sleep to console those in distress. The number of times she donated blood because of her rare blood type. The number of people she spoke out on behalf of because they felt unheard. The number of battles she supported for her friends suffering from depression. Yet Angela rarely accepted any of the same kind of help she offered to others for herself. When people remarked on how strong and confident Angela seemed, she always laughed it off. We all wished that Angela saw in herself what everyone else saw – that she could still be strong and confident even if she asked for help. She would have found herself surrounded by so much love, perhaps enough to continue her fight. We wish she knew what she leaves behind – family, loved ones, and so many friends who are devastated and lost without her. It is the family’s wish to raise awareness about depression by sharing Angela’s story and to continue Angela’s legacy of helping others by establishing a fund in her memory. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention at the website link below. http://afsp.donordrive.com/campaign/angelameng The friends and acquaintances of the Meng family are respectfully invited to join the family on Saturday, July 30, 2016 at Restland Memorial Park to remember and bid farewell to Angela Meng.
