Anna M. Hendricks' Obituary
Anna Mae Hendricks passed away peacefully in her room on May 6, 2024, only a week after turning 101.
Ann was born in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas to A.F. “Dock” and Willie May Pollard. She had two younger sisters; one dying at the age of one, the other, LaJuanda, was eleven years younger. She grew up in Dallas, graduating from Crozier Tech High School at the age of 16. She began working as a bookkeeper for the Texas Company in 1939.
She was married to Garland Hendricks for 64 years until his death in 2007. They had three children: Sallye Alling of Amarillo, TX, Mark Hendricks (wife Melinda) of Allen, TX, and Susan Kay now deceased. Ann quit work to become a homemaker after Garland returned from the war in Europe in 1945. They moved to Wichita Falls upon his return and welcomed Sallye the following year. They moved to Dallas after a few years and settled in a duplex in Cockrell Hill and welcomed Mark into the world. They moved to far north Dallas (just south of Walnut Hill Lane) in 1952 and started attending Walnut Hill Methodist Church, which was meeting at Bachman Lake. They welcomed Susan into the world and raised their family there until moving to Clear Lake City in 1972. After Susan was about twelve, Ann returned to the workforce as a bookkeeper. They moved back to Dallas in 1974 and Ann was steadily employed at various companies until she retired from Caruth Industries at the age of 78. She began attending First Christian Church of Plano after Garland’s death and moved to Allen in 2017 to be closer to her son.
Ann was devoted to her family and lived a life consistent with her faith. She was a woman of strong will and convictions but not overbearing and communicated with others with grace and patience. She was completely non-competitive and enjoyed playing games such as bridge, forty-two, and hearts. She was a very private person and like so many people who suffered through the Depression, she re-used materials rather than tossing them after one use.
She is survived by her daughter Sallye Alling and son Mark Hendricks (Melinda) and grandchildren Brian Alling (Sherry) of Conroe, TX, Blake Alling (Cyndi) of Port Arthur, TX, Dean Alling (Shiloh) of Kearney, Mo, Clay Alling of Jacksonville, TX, Cami Shue (Michael) of Austin, TX, Mandy Smoot of Amarillo, TX, Heather McCarty (Mark) of Singer, TX, Jennifer Burgess of McKinney, TX, and Garrett Adams (Beth) of Wilmington, N.C.
