Antonia "Nitsa" Karounos' Obituary
Antonia "Nitsa" Karounos (née Picoulas), who graced this world with her presence for over 100 years, peacefully entered into eternal rest on March 1, 2024, in Bedford, Texas. Born on April 15, 1923, in the quaint village of Douneika, Greece, Antonia lived a life exemplifying the enduring values of faith, family, and tradition.
She traveled a long way over a lifetime beginning with her journey from her birthplace in Greece, to New York City, New York, and then finally settling in Texas some 29 years ago.
She created homes wherever she went, making new friends, while staying close to those of the past. She shared stories of her life, and the generation of lives before her. She was a witness to history, seeing this world in its most glorious moments and in some of its worst and most difficult times. She showed love to her family and dear friends through her positive outlook, warm smile, and delicious Greek cookies for which she was known.
For over one hundred years she loved and lost many of the most precious in her life, but she always inspired us to remember that life is beautiful even though it is sometimes difficult to understand.
Left to honor her memory are her loving daughters, Katherine Naftis and JoAnn Karounos, and her son-in-law, George Naftis, who she loved as her own. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Matthew Naftis (and wife Megan) and Elayna Erick (and husband Casey); and her great-grandchildren who she adored: Penelope, Niko and Theo Naftis and Henry and Arthur Erick. She is also survived by her loving Goddaughter, Maria Zias, and numerous nephews and nieces.
She now rejoins in the Lord's embrace her beloved husband, Spero (Steve), and her sisters Loula, Sylvia, Christina, Georgia, and Niki, as well as her parents, Costas and Catherine, all of whom she loved dearly.
Antonia was a matriarch in every sense of the word, nurturing her family with love, wisdom, and the strength of her convictions.
Antonia's firm commitment to her faith was evident in her years of service and fellowship within the church community, which offered her great comfort and fulfillment. We are reminded that her virtues and the richness of the life she lived will continue to guide and inspire us. Her legacy is a testament to the values she upheld, and she will be profoundly missed by all who knew her.
