Archie Thweatt Shivar's Obituary
Archie passed away and went to heaven Friday October 7, 2022. He was a five year cancer survivor after a bone marrow transplant on May 2, 2017.
Archie was born January 16, 1947 to James Francis Shivar Sr. and Frances Thweatt Shivar. He had an older brother Jim. Archie grew up in Alexandria, Virginia and was a member of Lincolnia Methodist church. Archie graduated in 1966 from Thomas Jefferson High School in Alexandria, VA. After high school, Archie attended Shenandoah Community College in Winchester, VA, where he met Iris Silcox, who worked in the cafeteria. Archie attended Northern Virginia Community College, but the draft was coming, so he did as his older brother Jim suggested and joined the Navy, before the Army came calling.
Archie and Iris were married November 26, 1969 in Dallas at Walnut Hill Methodist Church. Their honeymoon was moving to San Diego, California. Archie served in the Navy for twenty years, sixteen of those with the Navy Reserve. During active duty, Archie was stationed at Imperial Beach Naval Air Station and North Island Naval Air Station both in the San Diego County area. Archie had ship- to- shore duty in the Philippines and the Vietnam coast as a helicopter mechanic. Archie graduated from San Diego University, Class of 1974 with a Bachelor’s of Science.
After active duty with the Navy Archie and Iris moved to Dallas in 1975 to be closer to Iris’s sister Nita, family and church. After moving to Dallas Archie worked at Continental Emsco in downtown Dallas. Their son Matthew James was born June 22, 1978 in Dallas, and their daughter Ruth Elizabeth was born September 29, 1981 in Dallas. He had a career in transportation and marketing. Archie ended his career working for the Transportation Security Administration as a Lead Transportation Security Officer at DFW airport.
Archie was a devoted family man and an active member of the community. Celebrating birthdays, graduations, weddings and holidays were important to Archie and he made time for family, friends and church. Church family brought Archie much love, joy and fun. Archie and Iris were members of Walnut Hill United Methodist Church and then Chapel Hill United Methodist Church. Archie enjoyed Bible Study at Grace Bible church also. He also enjoyed attending the Happy Warriors meetings at the Frontiers of Flight Museum. Archie and Iris enjoyed many road trips while they were in San Diego, CA and Dallas, TX, including many Thweatt family reunions in Virginia. He liked cars, planes and trains. Archie and Iris celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2019 with family and friends.
Archie is preceded in death by his brother James Francis Shivar, Jr. in 2007, his mother Frances Thweatt Shivar in 2000, his father James Francis Shivar, Sr. and much-loved aunts, uncles and grandparents. He is survived by wife Iris, son, Matthew (Weldon), daughter, Ruth Medcalf (Brian), nephew, Joshua Plummer (Brooke) and many, many nieces, nephews and cousins who will always miss (Uncle) Archie.
