Asish Chandra Nag's Obituary
We say goodbye to one of the kindest and gentlest men in the world. Asish Chandra Nag, age 86, passed on Wednesday, 10/23 at 11:31pm CST at his home in Richardson, Texas. To see him, you would never know he was a survivor and a refugee of the British occupation of India and what became East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), or that he was the last surviving member of his family of origin, living past his parents, 5 brothers, and 2 sisters, or even that he was married for over 50 years to his beloved wife, Nilima Nag. What you would know is that Asish was curious about life. Always a professor at heart, inquisitive and research oriented, his day-to-day life did not differ much from his professional career. He left East Pakistan after graduating high school, moved to Kolkata in India and pursued degrees in Biology and Histology studies. His interests drew him to the University of Hawaii in 1965 to obtain his masters in Biology and Ichthyology, because, well there are a lot of fish around Hawaii. But for his Ph.D. he left the Hawaiian sands to go the University of Edmonton in Alberta, Canada where he earned his degrees in Biology and Biochemistry. He then became a tenured professor at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan and continued his pursuit for not only gaining knowledge, but sharing his knowledge with others. He excelled in his profession and worked with the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association on the regeneration of heart muscle after myocardial infarction. Imagine if the heart could just heal itself.Retirement brought Asish to Richardson, Texas to spend time with his 3 grandsons and allowed him to continue his pursuits including painting and sculpting, as well as being an avid reader of all things. He leaves his wife, and 2 sons, Debasish (Ron) and Koushik (Rup), now aged 51 and 46; and their families in Richardson – Grandsons, Dhilan, aged 14, and twins Kamran and Aren, aged 12 are sons of Ron & Malini – and in Goodyear, Arizona (near Phoenix) where Granddaughters Kendall, aged 8, and Lauren, aged 4; and the baby of the family Camden, aged 2 live with their parents, Rup & Jamie.Asish was very proud of his grandchildren and their accomplishments. And he helped them to the last, as he recently helped his grandson, Dhilan, convey the struggle of India to become independent in a competitive historical storyboard. Asish encourages all of us help others attain knowledge, such as by donating to the Ramakrishna Mission. We ask that you please make donations to the Scholarships for the poor and meritorious fund in the name of Asish Nag, to carry on his legacy of spreading knowledge. https://donations.belurmath.org/product/donations-ramakrishna-mission-belur-math-donors-outside-india-usd?currency=USDPlease celebrate Asish’s life with the Nag Family at Restland, 13005 South Greenville Ave, Dallas, TX 75243.
