Atha Elisabeth "Betty" Lockwood Burrage's Obituary
Betty was born in Oran, Iowa on October 6, 1917, and she passed away on September 5, 2014. Her parents were Raymond Lockwood and Inez Masters Lockwood. She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Eleanor Lockwood Moore (Leland Moore). Betty is survived by her husband, B.P. (Bevo) Burrage; daughters: Rebecca Burrage (Keith Guernsey) and Rosemary Himes (James Himes); grandchildren: Jennifer Himes Simonich and Scott Himes (Jessica Himes); and six wonderful great-grandchildren (Madison, Nathan, Sara, Blakely, Harper, and Hudson). Betty grew up in Maynard, Iowa, where her parents had a grocery store, which played a big part in her early life. She attended Upper Iowa University and the University of Iowa, where she received a B.A. degree in 1939. She taught English and drama in Iowa before joining the Red Cross during World War II as a Recreation Worker at S.A.A.C. and Randolph Field in San Antonio, Texas. There she met and married Bevo Burrage, a World War II pilot. When the war ended he began his career at Continental Supply Company, and during the early years they transferred in and out of Dallas. Betty taught school where ever they lived, gaining teaching experience in kindergarten through 12th grade. She always loved the profession, the children and her fellow teachers. Her last 13 years before retirement were spent teaching second grade at St. Paul the Apostle School in Richardson, Texas. She belonged to Spring Valley United Methodist Church where she was an active member for many years. Betty and Bevo loved being with their friends and family, whether at home or on trips around the world. Everyone who met Betty knew she was truly interested in them. All were drawn to her winning smile, kind heart, and joy for living She had a wonderful sense of humor and loved nothing more than a good giggle. She had an adventurous spirit and always looked forward to trying something new. She continuously found goodness and beauty in life, even when she was bedbound and suffering. She faced many years of health issues and disability with courage and a positive outlook. Family always came first for Betty, and she was an inspiration to us all. A memorial service will be held September 9, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Spring Valley United Methodist Church (7700 Spring Valley Road, Dallas, Texas 75254). Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue at Restland Road, Dallas, TX 75238.
