Avo Griffin's Obituary
Avo West Griffin, affectionately known as “Bo,” passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home in Spring, Texas, on May 23, 2025, at the age of 87. Born in McKinney, Texas, Bo spent most of her adult life in Dallas, where she built a dynamic and respected life defined by resilience, ambition, and deep-rooted convictions.
Bo was a trailblazer in her career, becoming one of the first female managers at
Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. Her leadership extended into civic life as she
actively engaged in local Chambers of Commerce and numerous political campaigns—from John F. Kennedy to George W. Bush. Her passion for public service even brought her to the national stage, where she worked in the Greetings Office of the White House.
A longtime member of both Skillman Avenue Church of Christ and Preston Road Church of Christ, Bo found connection, meaning, and friendship through her faith communities.
Known for her spirited nature, sharp mind, and unwavering opinions, Bo had a magnetic presence that lit up every room. She loved being in the mix—dining out with friends, traveling, or hosting dinner parties at home. She never shied away from the spotlight and had a natural gift for bringing people together.
Bo was preceded in death by her parents, Ova James West and Claude Griffin West; her
sister, Martha Ann Bacon; and her beloved husband, Jay Griffin. Bo and Jay shared over three decades of marriage before his passing on March 2, 1999.
She is survived by her daughter, Kelly Griffin Peterson, and two grandsons, Major Jay
Peterson and Gage Griffin Peterson, who were the lights of her life.
